Happy Halloween my Star Detective enthusiasts, RosePal here with a special article for Star Detective Precure and what a perfect time of year for another collaboration project. We had the collaboration with Detective Conan earlier on in the season but now we have a collaboration with another iconic franchise especially with us magical girl fans, Ojamajo Doremi. I was really surprised when it was first announced on the 16th October 2026 and after I saw the first images related to the collaboration I was super happy. So join me as I talk about this amazing collaboration as well as talking about the Halloween episode of Star Detective Precure featuring this iconic franchise although not meeting the characters themselves but in a fantastic homage to them. Let’s review the 39th episode of the season, A Ojamajo Halloween.
Initial Announcement of the Star Detective x Ojamajo Doremi Collab

“Ojamajo Doremi” and “Pretty Cure,” who have passed the baton of Sunday morning children’s programming, will collaborate for one episode only in “Detective Pretty Cure!” with a story unique to the show. Please be sure to watch! The collaboration illustration was created by Yoshihiko Umakoshi, the character designer for “Ojamajo Doremi.” It’s a special, newly drawn illustration depicting the meeting of Cure Answer and Doremi!”
Announcement via Animate Times, 16.10.26
Of course Yoshihiko Umakoshi is no stranger to the Precure franchise as he was the character designer for Heartcatch Precure. It was amazing to see his iconic art style again, especially that we had an art book of his work a few years back.

I love the illustrations as it features two of my all time favourite characters from the magical girl genre. At the time of writing there is merchandise with this illustration from badges, clear files etc. Also from the article from Animate Times, we got comments from the producer of Star Detective Precure, Masaya Aramaki and the producer of Ojamajo Doremi, Hiromi Seki. Here is what they had to say, first Aramaki:
“I am very happy that we were able to collaborate with “Ojamajo Doremi,” a senior show that airs on Sunday mornings! Collaborating with anime series that have different worldviews was quite a challenge, but we built the collaboration around the year 1999, which is a characteristic of Star Detective, and used the TV anime “Ojamajo Doremi” that was airing at the time. Since we are using characters from the TV anime, Doremi herself cannot appear, but please enjoy the special performance that takes advantage of that!
Also, for this project, we had the pleasure of having Mr. Umakoshi, who is in charge of character design for Ojamajo Doremi, draw a collaborative visual for us. Amazingly, there are two different expressions for Answer! The illustration is wonderful, sparking all sorts of imagination based on the expressions of the two characters! We’ll be using them interchangeably depending on the story’s progression, so please pay attention to that as well!”
Then this is what Hiromi Seki said:
“When I heard the rumor that they were going to make a new Precure series set in 1999, I thought, “Ah, that year is a special year!” as the producer of “Ojamajo Doremi.” As expected, Mr. Aramaki, the producer of “Star Detective,” was from the generation that grew up watching “Ojamajo Doremi.” There’s a proverb that says, “You can learn to cross shallow waters from the child you carried on your back,” and working with staff members who were much younger than me was more interesting than I had imagined, and it was a fun time that brought back all sorts of memories.
We discussed the important points of the “Ojamajo Doremi” series, and it was great to see Narita-san working on the script again after so long. As I checked their storyboards, I was moved to tears to see that the skills of directors Sato, Igarashi, Yamauchi, and Nagamine had been faithfully carried on. Above all, I was grateful for the thoughtful gesture of having two directors named Hana-chan and Hazuki-chan take on the role of storyboard artist. I’m really looking forward to seeing how these two, who were probably just children back in 1999, will perform as adults in the future.”

We also get the designs that are going to be used in the Halloween episode of Star Detective which is episode 39. These designs are absolutely adorable. They definitely match the characters they are portraying. Obviously to take note as they are wearing the costumes from the first season. It’s a shame we don’t get someone to portray Momoko who joined the Ojamajo in Motto Ojamajo Doremi, seeing the original quartet was good enough for me. Now with this out of the way let’s talk about the episode itself and spot the Ojamajo Doremi references shall we?
Star Detective Precure Episode 39 Review

The episode starts with Jett creating some special Pre-Kit Gloss as it’s Halloween in Makoto Mirai City. We see his Pretty Smile move from the Pretty Holic episode which was a great piece of continuity. He is about to give them to the girls but he sees them in their costumes. Understandably he gives a hilarious scream but then is surprised that the girls made their own costumes. The costumes are super fun, Anna is the Grim Reaper, Mikuru is a devil, Luluka is a vampire and Kurea is a Chinese ghost known as a jiangshi. It’s great to see the fun side of Kurea as she gives an adorable dance with Pochitan joining in. Speaking of which Pochitan is dressed as Cure Answer, Mashutan is Cure Arcana Shadow which she kept from that arc and finally Shushutan is dressed as Cure Eclair. I know we will get merch from that soon as Pochitan and Mashutan already have that in those costumes.

Then we get to the Ojamajo Doremi homage with the introduction of Hinano. She was getting treats but lost sight of her mum and asked the girls for help. The girls happily obliged to help her. Kurea and Luluka did manage to find Hinano’s mum at the train station but she had to leave because of her baby brother and had to head home to look after him. The girls decide to look after Hinano and spend Halloween with her as well as getting her home. Anna admired Hinano’s costume. She is dressed up as Doremi from Ojamajo Doremi. Mashutan almost blew her cover as she loves that anime but luckily Luluka and Kurea covered it up as ventriloquism. Anna asks what Ojamajo Doremi is. Kurea explains it’s an in-universe show that airs on Sunday mornings in Makoto Mirai. Mashutan, Shushutan and Pochitan are super fans, I think that was a pretty fantastic detail.

Hinano then explains the story and the main characters of Doremi, Hazuki, Aiko and Onpu which we get to see silhouettes in front of the main title card. Of course it’s a popular anime in our world as it’s one of the huge series that comes to mind when recommending magical girl series to watch. This is one of my all time favourite magical girl series as well as anime in general.
I actually got into it when I watched two videos done by two popular magical girl YouTubers as well as great friends of mine, Doreimani who made a big compilation video making all the desserts from Motto and SailorGuardianHope who did a retrospective on the franchise as a whole. And of course I watched the anime film Looking For Magical Doremi as it gave me the loving appreciation for the franchise and also reminded me of my love for any anime and cartoons I watch through the eyes of the three girls who are fans of the anime.
Hinano shows off her custom made broom that she & her mum made together and everyone was impressed. Which of course made Ageseine steal it through a trade as it contained a Makoto Jewel. After asking Jett to look after Hinano, the girls wanted to go after her but wonder how they can go about it as they will get recognized in their costumes. Mashutan being the superfan, said they should go as the Ojamajo themselves with Shushutan saying they can use the special Pre-Kit Gloss Jett gave them. Which comes to this….
Pretty Witchy Star Detective Precure!!!

The girls transform into our favourite team of witch apprentices even to the point of doing the roll call. This is a reference to the roll call in both season 1 and season 2 known as Sharp. The fairies were super excited. Ageseine was surprised the girls caught up to her after she thought she lost them. When Mashutan introduced them, Agesiene was also new to the concept. Also Mashutan definitely fits into the Majo Rika role. After she lies off in her glider, Mashutan suggests they used magic to summon their brooms to fly and Luluka did this successfully followed by Anna, Mikuru and Kurea soon after. We see the magic summoning animation from the season 1 transformation trinkets.

Mikuru was adorable when she was figuring out how to get on the broom and was even more funnier when Mashutan corrected her. She told the girls to ride their brooms side saddle. Soon they get the hang of things after a few hilarious mishaps which perfectly fits into the comedy. The animators really studied Ojamajo Doremi and definitely brought the homage to life in the perfect way possible. Catching up with Ageseine, Mashutan tells them to summon the Couluer Polon wands, the second wands the Ojamajo gained in the second half of the first season. Anna tried to cast a spell only for Pochitan to point out they need the Magic Spheres to power it up. Mashutan and Shushutan’s reactions were comedy gold. Kurea and Luluka managed to make Ageseine crash into a tree and ultimately turned the broom into the Hanninda.

I loved the fact they stayed in their Ojamajo forms before and after the battle. The fight scene was a little quick but still a fun one regardless of that especially with Kurea using her Eclair Illusion to smack the trees hard for the leaves to fall down as the Cures discover that the Hannida is great at sweeping up the mess so quickly. After they recovered the broom as well as the Makoto Jewel, Ageseine retreated but she said she would watch Ojamajo Doremi after saying the girls’ costumes were cute. That was totally meta. The girls also earned some Magic Spheres which only means one thing….
Star Detective Magical Stage

The girls perform their own Magical Stage to make Hinano’s dream come true. They make her own broom fly and Hinano and Jett take to the sky with them. This is a fantastic reference to the Ojamajo Doremi Naisho episode where the Ojamajo make a sick girl’s wish come true by making her a witch for the night. Speaking of which, after Hinano asks if they are witches they respond with, “Na-i-sho” which is a fantastic reference to the OVA season. The episode comes to a heartwarming close with Hinano finally makes it back home and she and Jett watch the girls fly in the sky with a happy version of the laughing moon in Ojamajo Doremi with Anna saying Doremi’s catchphrase.

Overall this episode and this collaboration really put a smile on my face as a magical girl fan. Like I mentioned before, although we don’t get to see the cast of Ojamajo Doremi in the Precure universe, seeing the girls cosplaying as the characters, Mashutan, Shushutan and Pochitan being the super fans and the visual references really made this special. I think this could be a tool to introduce new fans to Ojamajo Doremi just like the Detective Conan crossover did. This is in my favourite episodes of Star Detective Precure overall and my overall favourite Halloween episode in the entire franchise. Now I turn over to you guys, what do you think of this episode? Did you enjoy the collaboration with Ojamajo Doremi? If you are a newcomer do you think you would get into Ojamajo Doremi? And what have you guys done for Halloween? Let me know in the comments below.
